How to measure for roman shades
Perfect fit for a beautiful window starts with accurate measurements. Once you’ve decided whether you’d like to mount your custom roman shades inside or outside the window frame, use our handy guide below to measure for a flawless fit.
To ensure a perfect fit for outside mount Roman shades, follow these detailed measurement steps. Use a steel tape measure and record measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch, measuring each window individually as sizes may vary slightly.
1. Determine Mount Type
First, decide whether to mount your Roman shades inside or outside the window frame. Outside mount shades cover the entire window frame and are installed on the wall above the window, on the ceiling, or on the molding around the window frame. This option works well when the window frame depth is insufficient or there are obstructions around the frame.
2. Measure Length (Height)
- Measurement Area: Start from the wall above the window or the top of the window frame and measure down to where you want the shade to end. We recommend extending the shade 2-3 inches beyond the top and bottom of the window to minimize light leakage.
- If the Window Has a Protruding Sill: Consider the sill height. If the shade extends too far below the window, it may block the sill. In this case, stop the shade at the sill level to ensure smooth operation.
- Consistency for Multiple Windows: For multiple windows of similar height in the same room, order all shades based on the tallest measurement to ensure consistent pleats.
3. Measure Width
- Measurement Area: Measure from one side of the window frame to the other, adding an additional 2-3 inches on each side (4-6 inches total) to prevent light seepage from the sides.
- Note on Width: Most fabric rolls are 54 inches wide. If your Roman shade width exceeds 50 inches, expect vertical joining hems to be added to achieve the required width. This is an industry standard, as fabric suppliers must add seams to create wider shades.
4. Choosing Length and Width Fractions
On the ordering page, you’ll see options for “Length Fraction” and “Width Fraction.” For instance, if you need shades that are 36.50 inches long, select “36” for Length and “1/2” (or .50 inch) in the Length Fraction dropdown.
5. Submit Exact Measurements
For outside mount Roman shades, the measurements you provide will be the final finished dimensions (with a tolerance of a few millimeters). We will not make any deductions from your measurements, so providing precise measurements will ensure a perfect fit for your shades.

Neutral Theme
Less is more. In the context of interior design, neutral means without color. Neutrals such as beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray, and shades of white appear to be without color. but in many applications these hues often have undertones. Be aware of these underlying tones as you match colors. Neutral colors are muted shades that appear to lack color but often have underlying hues that change with different lighting. To some extent, blacks, browns, tans, golds, and beige are considered warm. Cooler colors, on the other hand, are white, ivory, silver, and gray.
